Feng shui is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, classified as physiognomy (observation of appearances through formulas and calculations). The feng shui practice discusses architecture in terms of "invisible forces" that bind the universe, earth, and humanity together, known as qi.
Feng Shui has been practised for over three thousand years, and originated in ancient China. The fact that it is still being used today shows what a durable philosophy it is.
The five elements in feng shui are water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. A feng shui practitioner will incorporate these elements into a work or living space. They must be used together in the correct way to ensure that the energy of the area is in balance.
When it is impractical to incorporate the elements themselves into a space they can be represented by colors instead. For example, a wall painted red can invoke the qualities of the fire element. As with the elements, colors must not clash, but should instead complement each other.
